According to the Secretary of State’s report:

  • 43.9% of Registered Voters are Democrats
  • 32.3% of Registered Voters are Republicans
  • 4.3% are Other Political Parties
  • 19.5% are Decline to State Voters

These number show an increase of .7% in the percentage of Statewide Democrats, but also an increase of 2.4% in the percentage of registered Decline to States (compared to 2004).

What this means: The Democratic Party is opening their lead in registered voters compared to the Republican Party in California. That doesn’t mean that they control the government just yet though. In order to get the votes needed to win a general statewide election they need the 20% Decline to States to back them. If the Democratic Party (or the Republican Party for that matter) want to win, they cannot move to far to the extreme left or right.

Having a large Decline to State population is healthy for the state, but troublesome for the party. This percentage of Decline to States is the highest of all of the elections in the report, which goes back to 1992. This means Californians are choosing not to associate with political parties and voting based on the candidates or the issues. California may not be as adamantly blue as everyone seems to think it is.
